Girling: A British Brake and Suspension Name Since 1925

Girling dates to 1925, when Captain Albert H. Girling patented a wedge-actuated mechanical drum brake. New Hudson Ltd of Birmingham bought the patent in 1929 (Hemmings; Wikipedia: New Hudson). Joseph Lucas Ltd took over Girling brake production in 1938 and bought the patent in 1943. Lucas then combined its Bendix brake and Luvax shock-absorber businesses into a new company, Girling Ltd (Grace’s Guide). Girling Ltd was based at King’s Road, Tyseley, Birmingham, and made brakes and dampers (Grace’s Guide).

Girling disc brakes were first raced on the 1952 BRM Type 15 Grand Prix car. In 1957 they became standard equipment on the Triumph TR3, the first mass-produced sports car with front disc brakes (Hemmings). On motorcycles, most British bikes left the factory with Girling rear shocks (Bike Revival). Today’s Girling Classic range is designed to match the original Girling brake and suspension products (Lucas Classic Motorcycle).

How to Choose the Correct Girling Part

Check these before you order:

  1. Model and year. Fitment often changes between years within the same model family.
  2. Front or rear. Brake shoes, hoses and master cylinders are specific to their position.
  3. Hub type and size. Single-sided, conical or QD hubs, and 7-inch or 8-inch drums, take different shoes.
  4. Hose length and market. US-spec and European low-bar hoses are different lengths.
  5. Shock length, spring rate and style. Match the eye-to-eye length (12.4, 12.9 or 13.4 inches), the spring rate (100–145 lb) and open or shrouded style.
  6. Original part number. Each listing shows the factory part number alongside the Girling reference.

To confirm original part numbers, see our Triumph parts books, Norton parts books, BSA parts books and workshop manuals. If you’re still unsure, contact us with your model, year and frame number.
