Whitworth sockets are specialized hand tool sockets designed to fit the hexagonal heads of bolts and nuts made to the British Standard Whitworth (BSW) thread system. This system was established in 1841 by Joseph Whitworth and became the standard for threaded fasteners in Britain.
Whitworth Socket Threads
The BSW thread form uses a 55° thread angle with rounded crests and roots, differing from the 60° angle used in most metric and SAE threads.
