Occasionally, the tapped threads in an aluminum casting become damaged to the point where chasing the threads with a tap will not adequately repair the threaded hole and a thread repair becomes necessary. Commonly referred to as “HeliCoil”, this kit allows the mechanic to drill, tap and install a steel insert to restore the integrity of the 1/4″-26 TPI BSC threaded hole.

1/4″ threaded holes are commonly found on crankcases and aluminum cylinder heads from 1950s-1970s British motorcycles when tapped fine thread holes were common. This kit offers the mechanic options for saving castings that have suffered significant damage and compromised thread retention.
An oversized hole is drilled with the supplied drill bit and a special tap is used to cut threads for the wire insert. The insertion tool is used to thread and seat the insert into the hole, then the tang in the bottom of the insert is broken off, resulting in a repair with steel threads.
