With the advent of the oil-in-frame, Triumph and BSA introduced a new fork assembly with a smaller diameter 3/4″ steering stem and coarse 16 TPI UNC. The initial 1971 models specified coarse threads, but the parts catalogs suggest that during the 1972 model year production, the threads were changed to 24 TPI UNF. It is essential to check threads are present prior to ordering.

This split steering stem is machined with 16 TPI UNC threads with a 3/4″ ID. The domed head sleeve nut is finished in bright chrome plating. Sourced from TJ Wassell in the UK.
The pinch bolt on the top fork yoke is tightened once the steering stem nut is threaded and adjusted to the correct preload on the steering bearings.

The nut is split to allow for a very light interference fit within the fork top yoke. When threaded onto the steer stem and tightened, it pulls the lower and top fork yokes together to set the adjustment of the fork bearings.

Once the pre-load adjustment on the steering head bearings is achieved, the adjustment is secured by tightening the top yoke pinch bolt to hold the sleeve nut in place. A light smear of grease on the outer body of the nut will assist in rotation of the nut within the top fork yoke.
