The condition of the kick start pinion is important to proper operation of the kick starter assembly. When the pinion becomes excessively worn, the kick starter quadrant can become locked into place due to poor engagement.
The small kick start pinion rides on a sleeve on the main shaft and is retained in position against the ratchet mechanism by a spring. Quality manufactured in the UK.
The pinion is a gear that works in conjunction with a ratcheting mechanism that is fitted to the end of the main shaft. When the kick starter crank is lowered it engages the kick starter quadrant to turn the main shaft. The kick start pinion is prone to wear due to its sudden engagement with the quadrant and is often the cause of kick starting problems.
The outer gearbox cover must be removed to access the main shaft. The main shaft nut is retained by a tab washer that is recommended for replacement any time it is removed from the shaft. The ratcheting mechanism is fitted to the splines on the end of the main shaft and can be pulled off to access the kick start pinion.
