This 1/4″ British Standard Pipe (BSP) tap set is an ideal addition to any serious vintage British motorcycle mechanic’s tool cabinet, as the set includes both a leading and bottoming tap for cleaning and restoring threads in the petrol tanks of many British motorcycles from the 1930s through the early 1980s.
The 1/4″ BSP refers to the thread size, and not the thread diameter, which actually measures 1/2″, or 12.7mm. Most Triumph petrol tanks from the post-war era are threaded with 1/4″ BSP, as are the Norton Commando models, 1969-later BSA triples, and 1971-later BSA twins.
The fuel tank taps are useful for cleaning corrosion or paint out of the threads to ensure a leak-free junction with the petcocks. The correct sealing washers are necessary to complete the installation.
Plumber’s teflon tape is also sometimes used to fill gaps when the threads are worn. The specific pale yellow colored gas fittings tape is preferred for this application.
