Plug taps feature a medium chamfer with 3-5 tapered threads on the end, making it suitable for cutting or cleaning threads on both through-holes and blind holes. This tap is sized for a 3/8″-16 threads per inch British Standard Whitworth thread with 55 degree included angle application, also referred to as BSW. Ideal for use on pre-unit and early unit-construction Triumph 500 and 650 cylinder base stud holes. Not suitable for cutting or chasing 16 TPI UNC threads with 60 degree included angles.
Made from high-carbon steel and sourced from the UK, the 3/8″-16 TPI plug tap is an affordable solution for cleaning up damaged or corroded coarse threads in nuts and castings.
The various types of taps are designed for (3) stages of tapping threads into a drilled hole: a “taper” tap has a long gradual chamfer of 7-10 threads, while a “bottoming” tap has a short chamfer of 1-2 threads. This intermediate “plug” tap is the most commonly used and versatile tap with it’s medium chamfered 3-5 tapered threads, making it ideal for use on through-holes or blind holes with adequate clearance at the bottom of the hole.
The plug tap is generally used with an adjustable universal T-handle to securely turn the tap once seated into the hole. Cutting oil is necessary to lubricate the threads while cutting threads and the remaining metal chips must be removed from a blind hole after the threads are cut. Care must be taken to clean and protect the cutting surfaces to ensure long life and precision cutting with the tap.
