This pushrod tube seal kit allows the engine builder to cope with variances in cylinder head and head gasket thicknesses to achieve the optimal cylinder head “crush” when servicing the top end of 1969-1979 Triumph 500, 650, and 750 models.
The kit is comprised of an assortment of Viton sealing O-rings and square section seals, used with the “wedding band” sleeves to optimize sealing of the pushrod tubes with the guide blocks and cylinder head. This kit is designed to apply to the changes outlined in the Triumph Service Bulletin #324 to 1969 and later B-range models from engine number DU 85904 and C-range models from engine number H 65573. Included in the kit are (4) 71-1283 O-rings, (4) 70-4752 square section seals, (4) 70-3547 square section seals, and (2) 71-1707 sleeves.
Too little cylinder head crush can result in inadequate compression of the pushrod tube seals, leading to oil leaks, while too much crush can bend the cylinder head as the pushrod tube length is fixed and can’t adjust to the forces imposed by torquing the head bolts down. The seal assortment included in the kit will allow the correct desired gap to be achieved between the head gasket and the mating surface of the cylinder prior to torquing the head bolts. The steel “wedding band” sleeves are included to retain the structure of the lower seals when fitted over the tappet guide blocks.
Calculations for the optimal combination of pushrod tubes, guide blocks, head gasket thickness, and pushrod tube seals can be performed on the bench prior to fitting the cylinder barrels. Once the correct combination is determined, it is recommended to follow the procedure in the factory workshop manual for top-end reassembly.
