The condition of the kick start pinion is important to proper operation of the kickstarter assembly. When the pinion becomes excessively worn, the kick starter quadrant can become locked into place due to poor engagement. The kick starter ratchet is not only important for proper kickstarter operation, but it also forms an abutment for the main shaft nut to tighten against.
The kick start pinion rides on a sleeve on the main shaft and is retained in position against the ratchet mechanism by a spring. The ratchet is splined to lock onto the main shaft and is a stationary engagement point for the kick start pinion to turn the engine over. Quality manufactured in the UK.
The pinion is a gear that works in conjunction with a ratcheting mechanism that is fitted to the end of the main shaft. When the kick starter crank is lowered it engages the kick starter quadrant to turn the main shaft. The kick start pinion is prone to wear due to its sudden engagement with the quadrant and is often the cause of kick starting problems. This system was in place in pre-unit gearboxes and remained through the end of B-range production.
The outer gearbox cover must be removed to access the main shaft. The main shaft nut is retained by a tab washer that is recommended for replacement any time it is removed from the shaft. The kick starter ratchet is fitted to the splines on the end of the main shaft and will lift off the shaft along with the pinion, sleeve, spring, and washer.
