The kick starter ratchet is not only important for proper kick starter operation, it forms an abutment for the main shaft nut to tighten against.
The ratchet is splined to lock onto the main shaft and is a stationary engagement point for the kick start pinion to turn the engine over. Quality manufactured in the UK.
When the kick starter lever is lowered the kick start pinion locks into the kick starter ratchet and drives the mainshaft. The integrity of the spring behind the pinion is critical to the engagement of the ratchet and pinion.
The outer gearbox cover must be removed to access the main shaft. The main shaft nut is retained by a tab washer that is recommended for replacement any time it is removed from the shaft. The kick starter ratchet is fitted to the splines on the end of the main shaft.
