Steps on Cleaning

Remove the sump cap and trap so that you can flush solvent into the crank. Put the connecting rods in the solvent tank/parts washer as well.

We like to loosen the cleaveloc nuts on the con rods so that they can get cleaned but the original parts stay together.

We periodically have the wash go through different parts of the crank so that all the oil and debris will wash out.

If you don’t have your own parts washer, the next best thing is to go to an automotive place that will let you rent or use their washer.

After the wash, we’ll put a new trap in the crank and with the con rods we’ll measure the clearance with Plastigauge. Check out our other video here: Connecting Rods Clearance: How We Measure It on Our 1968

We also host a wide library of useful videos on our The Bonneville Shop – YouTube Channel.
