The condenser is critical for preserving the integrity of the contact points by momentarily storing energy when the contacts open, allowing the magnetic field in the coil to collapse. The condenser absorbs the energy to allow sparking at the spark plug and prevents unwanted arcing and pitting between the contact points.
The Emgo Lucas-type condenser is a form of a capacitor that stores energy momentarily in a contact breaker ignition. The 54420128 reproduction condenser is often mounted on a steel bracket, where the mounting stud is grounded to the frame, and the spade terminal is joined with the ignition coil.
The condensers work in conjunction with the coils, contact breaker points, battery, and spark plugs to comprise the ignition system on the majority of unit-construction British motorcycles from 1963-1978.
The 54420128-type condenser is mounted by the grounding stud at the base of the condenser body. Twin-cylinder models often have the condensers mounted on a bracket, shrouded with a rubber protective cover.
