The tapered roller steering head bearings are an upgraded design that was implemented along with the new internal-spring forks specified for the 1971 model year on Triumph and BSA 250 650 and 750 models. This design makes the bearing capable of supporting heavy loads in both radial and axial directions. Not suitable for use with Triumph T100 twins.
This replacement single-row tapered roller bearing is a direct fit for both the upper and lower positions on the steering head assembly for the 1971-later oil-in-frame models, as well as the 1975 Triumph T160 model. The ID measures .750″, OD measures 1.781″, with a width of .610″.
Timken-style tapered roller bearings consist of a two-piece cup and cone assembly. The outer ring is the cup, while the inner ring, rollers, and cage assembly comprises the cone. The parts of the bearing are detachable, and the cone is narrower on one end, and the races are built with one side narrower to match the rollers. Supplied with an integrated protective rubber dust seal.
The front wheel and mudguard must be removed to allow access to the top of the fork assembly for renewal of the bearings. The outer races are drifted into the head tube of the frame, while the bearings are a snug slip fit on the steer tube. Refer to the factory workshop manual for details on the procedure.
