This pair of exhaust cam followers were manufactured with the oil holes offset, so they are incompatible for applications where the exhaust tappet guide block is pressure-fed. They can be used, however, in the 1963-1965 650cc or 1981-1983 750cc engines where 1-1/8″ radius cam followers are desired and no oil feed to the guide blocks is present.
The 70-8801 exhaust cam followers feature a 1-1/8″ radiused head, also known as ‘R’ radius. Many aftermarket camshafts require the use of the flatter ‘R’ radius tappets. The Triumph factory ‘Q’ cams with the E3134 profile are generally specified for use with this cam follower profile, including the 70-9989 camshaft. When used in an early unit-construction engine prior to 1966, or a late-model 750 engine with non-pressure fed oil passages in the tappet guide blocks, the placement of the oiling holes on the stems of the tappets is inconsequential. Sourced from the UK by LF Harris.
In almost all instances, when new camshafts are being installed, the manufacturer will specify the replacement of tappets showing any wear whatsoever. The R-radius exhaust tappets can be used in the exhaust guide blocks on pre-unit engines with magneto ignition, as well as early unit-construction and last-generation 750 engines with the appropriate camshafts and no provision for pressure-fed guide block lubrication.
The tappets require pre-lubrication with assembly lube when fitted to the guide block. It is recommended to secure the stems in the guide block with a zip tie or strong rubber band to prevent them from falling out into the engine cavity during installation of the cylinder barrel onto the crankcase.
