BSA petrol tanks from the 1950s and 1960s were originally equipped with the notoriously leaky horizontal Ewart’s “push-pull” petcocks, which have a 3/8″ BSP inlet. This adaptor allows the use of 1/4″ BSP petcocks, as used on Triumph and Norton models.
Finished in a bright zinc-plating, this petcock adapter effectively reduces the size of the threaded hole in the tank to fit the smaller diameter vertical fuel taps used commonly on Triumph and Norton twins from the 1960s and 1970s. The adaptor reduces the 5/8″ ID threaded boss in the petrol tank to the 1/2″ OD of the typical 1/4″ BSP petcock.
BSA eventually changed the specification for the fuel taps to the vertical 1/4 BSP type after the 1970 model year. Care must be taken when fitting the vertical petcocks and positioning the fittings to the BSA A65L models with twin-carburetors to avoid contacting the carburetors.
The fuel tank must be completely drained prior to fitting the adapters and petcocks. A fiber washer can be used to seal the adapter to the tank, and a wrap of yellow plumber’s tape can also be applied to the threads of the adapter and the petcock to help seal the threads.
